Our Blended Ground

Our Blended Ground

A visual exploration of the diaspora, identity, and the space in-between.

What does it mean to exist between two worlds? To have your roots planted deeply in one culture, while your daily life and branches stretch out into another?

Our Blended Ground is a photographic series that explores the layered, often invisible experiences of bi-cultural individuals and people of color within the diaspora. In a society that frequently reduces diverse identities to a single, flattened narrative, this project seeks to do the exact opposite. It is a celebration of complexity. It acknowledges the generations of history, migration, resilience, and cultural blending that we carry within us. We do not just live between worlds; we create our own new foundation—our blended ground.

A Visual Dialogue in Nature

The project consists of ten large-scale, powerful portraits of individuals with vastly different cultural and ethnic roots. By deliberately staging these portraits in raw, outdoor landscapes, the series strips away societal borders and urban constructs. Nature becomes the ultimate equalizer and a symbol of the earth we all share. No matter where our ancestors came from, we are grounded by the same soil.

The portraits are not meant to stand alone; they engage in a visual dialogue with one another. When an individual with Ethiopian roots is placed next to someone with South Asian heritage, a silent conversation emerges. The images highlight striking cultural contrasts, yet ultimately reveal a profound harmony in the human experience.

The Vision

Our Blended Ground is more than a series of portraits; it is a claim to space and a call for connection. It invites the viewer to look beyond stereotypes and labels, and to step into a "soft space" where the other is no longer unfamiliar, but recognizably human. It is an ode to the universal search for belonging, and a vibrant tribute to the beauty of navigating the space in-between.

The Spectrum of Self

My project, The Spectrum of Self, is an intentional deep dive into the complexity of identity. My core aim is full representation, a commitment to capturing people of color across all their brilliant shades, forms, and identities.
As a photographer, I began by asking a simple yet profound question of each subject: Who are you, exactly? And critically, how does that intrinsic "you" translate and emerge at first view?

Crucially, I wanted to tell their story entirely from their perspective. I gave no directions on hair, makeup, or styling. Instead, I told each person: "You are the Director of your own story." My role was simply to guide where needed and capture the pictures.
To enable this exploration, I set them a task: to choose a single garment that acts as the visual argument for their selfhood. This was an exercise in self-definition guided by four core words: identity, authenticity, artisticity, and aesthetics. The clothing had to be the honest answer to my prompt: How can you show me who you are in your clothing?

The final element is the setting, a deliberate placement in dialogue with their truth. For some, I chose a specific, bustling city center, a location with which they hold the deepest affinity. This was a challenge: to stand in the middle of a crowd and be their absolute, authentic self, even when everyone is looking. This project is a study in unveiling and a powerful celebration of identity asserted and embraced.

Melanin shoot

"Melanin Shoot is a photo series about melanin that celebrates the beauty of all skin tones. It is a visual affirmation of the beauty that exists in every shade. The portraits represent diversity, empowerment, and the beauty of melanin in all its shades in women. And they are a visual reminder that beauty comes in countless forms and that every skin color is worth celebrating.
